Nova Scotia Community Mourns Teen Killed in Dog Attack

Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, is in mourning after a 13-year-old boy died following an attack by three dogs. The incident occurred while the boy was riding his bicycle. Community members are providing support to the boy’s family.
Details of the Attack
The attack occurred on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown on January 3, 2026. RCMP reported the dogs involved were two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler. The boy was airlifted to a Halifax hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The dogs were euthanized by a veterinarian the day after the attack. Authorities are conducting tests for rabies and other potential factors.
Investigation Underway
Staff Sgt. Mark Macpherson of the Shelburne District RCMP stated investigators are canvassing the area. They are collecting video footage and interviewing individuals regarding the dogs’ behavior.
“The important thing here is we just want to find out what happened…We just want to get the facts together like we do in our investigations or any other investigation, and then make a decision from there,” Macpherson said.
Macpherson added that the dog owners are cooperating with the investigation. RCMP databases show no prior calls related to these dogs.
Community Support for the Family
The victim has been identified as Drew Nickerson, a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School. A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $60,000 for his mother, Dawn Schnare Nickerson.
- Fundraiser organized by Trish Harris
- Drew was Dawn’s only child
- He enjoyed soccer, swimming, and riding horses
“In a small community when one person hurts, everybody hurts,” said Harris.
The local fishing community and seafood companies have also contributed to support Drew’s mother. Southwest BLAST FC, a community soccer group, remembered Drew’s love for soccer.
School Support and Counselling
The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) is offering counselling to school staff and students. Psychologists and counselors are available at Shelburne Regional High and neighboring schools.
“Supports are in place at Shelburne Regional High and neighboring schools (Tuesday) and in the days ahead, including psychologists and counsellors,” said Jared Purdy, TCRCE’s executive director.
Impact on the Community
Macpherson described the incident as “extremely distressing” for everyone involved. He extended thoughts to the boy’s loved ones and friends.
